Mathis Gasser – Works 2010-2013
LiveInYourHead, Geneva
28.11.2013–4.1.2014

LiveInYourHead presents Mathis Gasser: Works, 2010-2013, an exhibition in which the Swiss artist presents a selection of works produced in the last three years, since he left HEAD – Genève in 2010. Gasser has decided to construct his project around a set of some thirty paintings. Some of them have never been displayed in Geneva before, and others have been produced specially for this exhibition. Mathis Gasser has invited the Swiss artist Pierre Vadi (also a HEAD graduate) to ‘echo’ his project. Opposite Gasser’s works on the wall, Vadi presents a selection of sculptures which are laid on the ground and complete the installation, a collective form conceived in a serial logic.

In an interview on the exhibition, Gasser states: ‘The title Works 2010-2013 suggests various strata. It’s linked to the recurrent size of the canvases presented in the exhibition ... Over the past three years I’ve decided to use frames with a standard height of 80 cm and a width of 50 to 60 cm ... The works shown here are not part of a finished series, but rather part of a set of works in progress. New paintings will be added to this constellation of images and so, in effect, will the alter the whole thing. This happens because each image forms a relationship with all the rest, creating affinities and lines of association. When a new item joins the constellation, it reactivates the preexisting images ... In the technological age we live in, the painting process, during the production phase, turns me into a kind of ‘image machine’, a kind of mediumistic personality who paints and appropriates images, letting them pass through his body so that they can become part of the whole, a constellation of images.

This exhibition is the first part of the ‘Questions of painting’ project, a series of exhibitions spanning the years 2013 to 2015.
